Religious Ceremonies

The same regulations as for a civil ceremony apply to a religious ceremony and permission to marry must first be obtained from the civil authorities. The appropriate religious celebrant must also be contacted and the religious regulations followed in accordance to the specific denomination or religion.

Where you can marry

Religious ceremonies in England and Wales can take place in religious buildings such as churches, synagogues and temples as long has they have been registered for marriages.

Who can solemnise the ceremony

The ceremony will be solemnised by an authorised religious celebrant representing the specific denomination. If the religious celebrant is not licensed to register the marriage, a registrar must attend the ceremony to supervise the signing of the register in order to comply with civil law.
