Religious Ceremonies
The same regulations as for a civil ceremony apply to a religious ceremony and permission to marry must be obtained from the civil authorities. The registrar will issue a marriage schedule; once satisfied there is no legal impediment to the marriage. The appropriate religious celebrant must also be contacted and the religious regulations followed in accordance to the specific denomination or religion.
Where you can marry
Religious ceremonies in Scotland can take place anywhere, and not in a normal place of worship, as long as it is agreed suitable by the licensed celebrant. All possibilities are available outside or inside, from historic castles and stately homes to mountain tops and secluded beaches.
Who can solemnise the ceremony
The ceremony will be solemnised by an authorised religious celebrant representing the specific denomination.
Marriage Schedule
The marriage schedule will be issued no later than one week before the date of marriage and will need to be collected in person by either of the parties to the marriage. It must then be produced to the official who is conducting the ceremony before the ceremony takes place. The marriage schedule must be returned to the registrar within 3 days in order for the marriage to be registered.
