Weddings in Oxford

A British wedding in ‘‘The City of Dreaming Spires,” combined with some essential sightseeing will make this an experience not easily forgotten! A perfect mix of both ancient and modern, Oxford will have you busy for several hours, or days if you can not draw yourself away from its many attractions.

Oxford is most famously known for its university and surrounding honey-coloured stone buildings, all boosting some of England’s finest architecture. The thirty six colleges and five halls are dotted around the centre with many of them featuring fine gardens with ivy-clad quadrangles – all within walking distance! The River Thames, or ‘Iris’ as it is otherwise known, offers lovely riverside walks or you could hire a punt and discover the wonders of the city the traditional way! Alternatively you can see all the sights from an open top double decker bus which regularly circulates the area. Oxford has the added bonus of having the Cotswolds only a few miles away; make sure to leave the hustle and bustle of the centre and explore the peaceful countryside this beautiful and unique region.

Dating back to Anglo-Saxon times, inevitably Oxford is steeped in history and tradition, with 900 buildings of architectural or historical interest. The numerous museums reveal all that has shaped the Oxford we adore today. Don’t leave Oxford without visiting The Oxford Story where you are fastened into an old-fashioned school desk and literally transported back to the 13th century where you will come across the sounds and smells of the university those many years ago – museums have never been so thrilling with this ride-through exhibition! The Bodleian Library is a book-lovers paradise, containing over 5 million books, making it one of the greatest libraries in the world.

You will have no trouble at all finding entertainment. There is a wide choice of places to eat out or simply enjoy a few drinks with friends, from old pubs filled with character and coffee houses to gourmet restaurants and little cafes. Shopping in Oxford is an interesting pastime where you will find modern malls, remarkable bookstores and speciality shops where you are sure to come across local souvenirs. There is also a lively cultural scene with a variety of performing arts. The New Theatre is the largest, where you will find ballet, opera, pantomime, musicals and concerts all under one roof. There are also other small theatres with a programme full of events such as Shakespeare and comedy acts. If you visit during the spring and summer months, the Morris Dances with catch your eye as they put on displays around the city – a tradition not to miss!
